Manna Market

Second Harvest Official

The Manna Market food recovery program receives food from local grocers that is near the end of its shelf life or usefulness.  A Second Harvest Heartland Food Rescue Driver collects donated food. The drivers are certified food handlers trained to the standards required by the Department of Environmental Health and the Department of Agriculture. They operate seven refrigerated trucks and guarantee safe pickup and delivery of food donations.

Food is delivered to the Refuge of Hope Church on every Friday around 2:30pm.  Volunteers unload and sort the food.  Registration opens at 5:00pm. Upon registration, a numbered ticket is given to each person.  Starting at 5:30, ticket numbers are called at random and the person may enter the food line and receive food items.

Volunteers are the biggest part of the Manna Market program.  We encourage people to give back to their community by serving as a volunteer.  We need volunteers to unload and sort the food at 2:30pm as well as help distributing and carry boxes for people going through the line.  This is your invitation! All you need to do is show up and start helping.

We use the term “Manna Market” because of the following:

“Manna” because we read in Exodus 16:15 that the heavenly bread fell and the children of Israel saw it and called it Manna.  And Moses said to them, “This is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat”. They were supposed to take only what they needed and eat it that day otherwise it would spoil.

“Market” because we allow our guest to choose the foods they want.

1)   One ticket per address.

  • Two families, two brothers, or father & son living at the same address get only one ticket.

2)   A Carpool is two or more tickets combined into one ticket and those people are riding in the same car.

  • This is to help prevent boxes getting mixed up during pickup and because our parking lot is full.
  • Example: a carpool of 3 means there are 3 people who live at different addresses and who are riding in the same car.
  • If you are riding in separate cars then that is NOT a carpool.

3)   The volunteer food monitor will tell you how much of one item you can take.  Please follow their instructions.
